How we preserve your story

A story worth capturing
is worth keeping forever.

Anyone can record a video. The hard part — the part that matters — is making sure it’s still there, still watchable, and still theirs, long after the phones and apps of today are gone. Here’s exactly how we make your family’s story last.

🎞️

We keep the original, untouched — forever.

The heart of preservation is simple: we create one high-quality master recording of every interview and never alter it. Every edited film, every clip, every shareable version is made from a copy. The original — their voice, exactly as it was spoken — stays preserved as the true source your family can always return to.

Why this matters

Most family videos don’t survive. Here’s why.

Think of the home movies your own family has lost — the camcorder tapes no one can play, the phone that broke with three years of videos on it, the account no one could log into after a loved one passed. It’s not that families don’t care. It’s that nobody planned for the recording to outlive the technology that made it.

The oral-history field has a principle for this: preservation is planned from the very beginning, not bolted on at the end. We build every LegacyWorks project that way — so the thing you paid to capture is still here in fifty years, not lost to a dead hard drive or a company that vanished.

Our preservation standards

Four commitments that keep it safe.

These are the same principles archivists and oral historians use — translated into plain language, and built into every project.

01

An unchanged master

One preservation-grade original per interview, kept exactly as recorded. It’s never edited or compressed — it’s the source of truth everything else is made from, and the copy your grandchildren will thank you for.

02

Word-for-word transcripts

Every interview is transcribed in their actual words — not summarized, not rewritten by software into someone else’s phrasing. The transcript makes the story searchable, readable, and citable, and it preserves the meaning even if formats change.

03

Multiple copies, multiple places

A single copy is a single point of failure. Your finished films and masters are delivered so they can live in more than one place — your own storage, a cloud drive, and a physical keepsake — so no one lost device or closed account can erase them.

04

A documented record

Each interview comes with the details that keep it meaningful over time: who was interviewed, when and where, and what was covered. It’s what turns a nameless video file into a findable, trustworthy piece of your family’s history.

From interview to heirloom

What happens to your story, step by step.

1

We capture it well

Good preservation starts with good capture — clear audio, clear picture, recorded at high quality from the first moment, because you can’t preserve what wasn’t captured properly.

2

We lock the master

The original recording is set aside, unchanged, as the preservation master. Nothing we do afterward ever touches it.

3

We transcribe and document

The interview is transcribed word-for-word and paired with a record of who, when, where, and what — the context that keeps it meaningful for generations.

4

We craft the films from copies

Every edited episode, highlight film, and shareable clip is made from copies — so the polished versions never put the original at risk.

5

We put it in your hands

You receive the finished films, the transcripts, and the master archive — yours to keep, back up, and pass down. It doesn’t live only on our servers. It lives with you.

Ownership

You hold the real thing — not just a login.

When the project is done, your family physically holds its own archive. That’s the difference between a keepsake you own and a subscription you rent.

💾

The master files

High-quality originals, delivered to you — the true source, in your possession.

📝

The transcripts

Every word, in writing — readable and usable even without the video.

🎬

The finished films

The edited episodes and highlight film, ready to watch and share for generations.

The question every family should ask

“What happens if you disappear?”

It’s the right question — and the honest answer is the whole point of how we work. Your family’s story does not depend on us still being here. Because you hold the master files, the transcripts, and the finished films yourself, your archive survives independently of LegacyWorks, of any app, and of any single company.

We build it so that even if we were gone tomorrow, your grandmother’s voice would still be here for your grandchildren. That’s not a feature. It’s the promise.
